EUGENE, Ore. –Quick intervention by Eugene police and emergency medical personnel Thursday night prevented a man from hanging himself from a bridge, according to authorities.

The Eugene Police Department said officers responded to a 911 call at 7:17 p.m. on October 5 in which the caller reported a man was attempting to hang himself from a bridge at Norkenzie Road and Donovan Drive. A responding officer who observed the man actively attempting to hang himself ran across both lanes of Beltline Highway, up an embankment to the victim, and cut him down with a knife, police said.
