sigh, it’s hopeless, it will not happen. Reddit is now looking to fill a “Senior Machine Learning Engineer, Ads Targeting” position (https://boards.greenhouse.io/reddit/jobs/5009252). Which means that it wants people to use its app so that it’s machine learning algorithm can target ads to users and make money for its future investors.
We’re talking about a capitalist platform. Reddit’s whole purpose right now is to go public (IPO). Lemmy/Kbin are the only free platforms.
They have hundreds of mobile developers and can’t make a decent app or features anyone wants – I’m going to guess that whatever executive pet project that one is won’t ever see any reasonable output either.
Yeah, it is kind of shocking to think the company has been around for 18 years, and their app is still so bad people will pay for third party apps instead.
Reddit would’ve been better off buying out the most profitable/popular third party app, making minor housekeeping changes (app name, app logo, etc) and moving on. Instead they show themselves in the foot a little.
I agree, assuming their goal was to have an app that appeals to users. Possibly the one they have appeals to advertisers, although even advertisers probably prefer an app people use willingly.
They bought Alien Blue but then decided to write new apps from scratch.
It’s a “bad” app to you because you are not the paying customer. For the paying customer (advertisers), it’s a great app.
There is no use for having a good first party app when you can just kill all competition. Reddit does not need to care anything other than making money through their apps.
Yeah, and the end game is data collection. Doesn’t matter if users complain. As long as the users of the official app grows it is a success.
Man, there is such a huge difference in how one is led to interact with a site run for social connection verses capital funnelling. Rage and anxiety fuel the engagement. No thanks. I am so happy that people are finally dipping their toes here. I made this account a few months ago and just waited. Ever since I got into the Fediverse, I have not really looked back. I still mod some communities on Reddit but they are small and slow enough not to matter so much for quick checks.
Ain’t gonna happen. Reddit does not care about its users. The only way forward is the fediverse!
Not going to happen as long as mods are asking for it but fully showing they aren’t willing to actually leave and are returning subs to normal.
What incentive is there for Reddit to change anything the way mods demand when they can’t even be bothered to give the threat of leaving by setting up an alternative community off reddit?
Way this is going if I’m spez I’m confident that mods and users are already giving up and going back to using reddit. They can’t leave.
The mods have no power or say. They will be run over. It’s not their platform and their contributions are voluntary. Reddit will do whatever it wishes.
And they sure proved that by folding immediately and showing how desperate they are to remain mods of reddit. Everyone knows they are empty threats.
It’ll be all forgotten news in a few months. They’ll fall in line.

Why would third party apps return? Reddit has lost their trust in a manner that I can’t see them recovering.

Reddit broke my trust. No way I’m going back there unless a major change occurs such as the CEO leaving to make place for a new one who is not as profit driven. But no way that’s gonna happen
I wouldn’t go back to posting there even for a new CEO, a groveling apology, and a full roll-back of the API policy. I had a sentimental attachment to the site, but it’s been going downhill for some time. They might try to fix it, but I will always know that they can ruin it for me at any time. My issue isn’t even profit seeking per se, it’s the way they have deliberately given the finger to the userbase. I’m just not going to spend any emotional energy trying to give them another chance.
I read through the wiki page and specifically the controversies section, which reminded me of a lot of the shitty stuff they’ve pulled over the years and it convinced me there really was no reason to keep supporting them.

Fuck that. Nothing short of Reddit getting rid of its CEO, Open Sourcing their app and canceling their IPO plans would even make me consider using it again. I see a much better future on the Fediverse.

Dunno. At this point, I’ve 98% left Reddit, but there are still a few niche subreddits with no alternative, that I might consider using a 3rd party app for.
Would rather use them for Lemmy or the fediverse, though. A 3rd party app that included access to both the fediverse and Reddit, would be ideal.
