(WASHINGTON) – Today, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters walked away from the national bargaining table and officially demanded UPS exchange its last, best, and final offer no later than June 30. The Teamsters gave UPS a one-week notice on Tuesday …
Go get it ups. From a fellow teamster.
I swear if Biden stops this strike too, I’m gonna write a very sternly worded letter to my representatives.
UPS drivers are covered by the NLRA, like most other workers.
The Railway Labor Act specifically exempts rail workers from the NLRA. Other groups specifically exempted are municipal government employees and employees of the federal reserve bank.
For Biden to bust their strike, Congress would have to repeal the NLRA or pass a law specifically exempting those employees from the NRLA. And they could not pass a law that specifically exempts UPS drivers (that would be approaching a bill of attainder), they would have to target the whole industry.
I appreciate the explainer. Not totally convinced it would stop dirty dealing by those in power if they were feeling the squeeze from the corporate overlords, but it is good to know at least they can’t do it legally/easily.
Do it.
Hmm.
I would assume that this means that FedEx rates would skyrocket, since UPS being out of the picture would greatly decrease package delivery capacity.
Amazon also has their own delivery network, so I wonder if this would be a big win for them versus other online vendors.
