    rats are incredibly intelligent animals. THey can learn tricks and shit. They’re really smart animals.

          My money is on rats becoming the next sentient species after our demise.

          I had a couple as pets way back. Really awesome critters.

            They would need much more longevity for that, my bet is on parrots.

            it just sucks that they don’t live for very long. You only get 2-4 years with them, and then they die :(

              Mice have had some luck with gene transfer from naked mole rats to extend their lifespans, maybe rats could also get some life extension genes in the future. Despite their name naked mole rats are not very related to rats, I think they are closer to squirrels than to moles or rats.

          Damn! They might be eligible for voting rights. How intelligent does an animal have to get to get human rights? I mean that in all seriousness.

          Could you train a rat to press a button when it sees a stranger?

    I’ve always assumed animals of this sort have imaginations (otherwise how could they dream) so it’s the part about using implanted electrodes to control things with their minds that I found the most surprising!
