I think it is a barbaric practice which should be outlawed. Let kids be kids, they can change their bodies when they grow up.

Why do medical professionals and the medical consensus disagree with you then?

Medical professionals have never been wrong about anything, especially new things with very little data to study.

Medical professionals In the U.S was performing lobotomy less than 50 years ago and there was general consensus that it is beneficial within the country, but it was criticized outside, e.g in Soviet Union. Right now there is some consensus that minors can consent to sex change within the U.S mostly, but it is mostly unheard of outside. Same pattern in my opinion.

That is not what the consensus is.

Fine. You get puberty blockers but we get rid of child labor laws. Screw that big government protecting kids.

Regular people support the right of a child to get beneficial medical care with parental approval and in consultation with doctors.

You strike me as well informed about alternative treatments for gender dysphoria. Which ones do you recommend?

Edit: as always, ignoring the issue except to politicize it.

If not for the dripping sarcasm, I’d be pointing out how accurate your handle is, to say that to a transphobe 😂

This guy is definitely, 100% a troll, so I’m not sure whether they actually believe what they’re saying. Still, I might end up correcting someone’s misconceptions.

Lol I wasn’t ignoring, Lemmy just wasn’t working great for me the last couple of days, I guess due to the recent heavy load on the server.

My preference is heavy psychiatric treatment to help these people accept reality. We usually don’t let other delusional people mutilate themselves to fit their diseased mental state, I don’t see why trans is different.

I feel sorry for these people. They are clearly unwell, and have high rates of comorbid mental conditions.

Generally, that’s how they transition; they get therapy and consult medical professionals to see whether it’s dysphoria or another issue. It isn’t taken lightly by anyone involved, and the dysphoria generally improves on treatment, as do their associated syndromes. They’re unwell, so they seek out the best treatment we currently have for the illness they’re diagnosed with.

The human brain is still far from being understood well enough to affect the incredibly complex feeling of dysphoria in the way you’re seeking. To compare medications and therapy to the tools of a carpenter, we currently have hammers and nails, and some crude saws. We’re on the cusp of creating chisels, and decades from grinders. Treating dysphoria would require a router, which is a decade past that. There aren’t any other solutions for this rare, often fatal, condition.

If you’re interested in helping those unfortunate enough to have it, and aren’t interested in standing back for medical professionals to do their thing, working in medical research to expedite the creation of other treatment options would be your best bet.

TLDR: you’ve overestimated current medical and psychological science to be able to have said any of this, but may be able to create your vision of a cure within your lifetime.

I’m well aware of the current limitations of our understanding of the brain, and I don’t see how I’ve overestimated nor how the same argument shouldn’t apply to the current treatments for transgenderism.

I agree that our current methods are basic, which is why I think that allowing people to mutilate themselves to masquerade as the opposite sex is a blunt way to try and treat the problem. I think that I’m the future we will look back and acknowledge how crude our current methods are, and hopefully have a better way to treat it.

I feel for them, but I won’t ever buy into the idea that drugs and surgery can turn you into the opposite sex. The only thing it can do is turn you into a rudimentary approximation. Believing you are something you are not is a delusion, and hopefully one day we can treat the underlying mechanism that causes it.

It’s not internally consistent to accept the limitations of modern medicine, and disregard them seconds later. The reality of the situation is that while people entirely irrelevant to the conversation suggest improving treatment and plead for delays, those experiencing dysphoria suffer. As republicans love to say, 42%. Don’t miss the forest for the trees, preferring death to what you’ve been told to perceive as disfigurement.
