Credit asm-c I didn’t even know the AOM had a working group for Volumetric Visual Media. Asm-c At first I thought this might be related to the light field stuff that’s in libaom (think sci-fi holograms), but it’s actually about compressing “traditional” 3D models. Sounds good to me, though I have no idea what the situation is when it comes to 3D model compression. I assume it’s a hodgepodge of no compression (or just making lower-detail copies for LoD purposes and such) and maybe some general-purpose/proprietary compression algos depending on which software/engine is being used and what it’s being used for. The first search result for “3d mesh compression” is something from Google, so I guess it makes sense that the AOM is interested.
