Grangemouth does loads of plastics, and stuff other than petrol. As much as we need to transition off oil, we still very much need this. I also doubt big Jim will give it up, he’s saber rattling for more tax rebates is all

Why do people keep looking at this and saying “Oh, there’s so little hope for these workers now.” instead of recognising that this is an opportunity to reinvest the skills of those people into something better? There’s a ton of experience in energy infrastructure, maintenance, management, technical expertise, etc that will need support to transition to a different industry, but it’s valuable nonetheless.

SG has said they are planning a “Just Transition” so maybe the Tories should focus on helping to make sure it’s a solid plan for the workers and local community without letting Ineos weasel any loopholes.

As so little of the work is in Grangemouth. And yes, loads of transferrable skills, but not actually that many Green jobs in Scotland. Governments are unwilling to wholesale invest in power plants either, so it’s fiddling with incentives instead of just doing it and so this then becomes political pass the parcel too. A cluster fuck for those already employed too, as mortgages need repaid and changing sector rarely yields even the same rate of pay

Indeed. With so little financial control there is a limit to what SG can afford to put in place.
