Back when Will Eisner invented the graphic novel, he did something astounding.
Rather than ink directly over his pencils, he layed down onion skin paper and inked on that instead. Perfectly preserving the original pencil work.
A few years ago Dark Horse went through and produced a full, artist sized, two volume set. One book with all the original pencil art, the other with the finished inks.
So you could see exactly where he started and finished with each page.
Beyond that 2 volume set, they produced 125 signature editions. Obviously, Mr. Eisner passed long before these books were done, but they did obtain signature plates from his archives.
