Flat Worms (Photo by Owen Schmit)
Flat Worms have been a force since they crawled into our comfort zone and wreaked havoc six or so years ago. Theirs is the kind of garage-punk that gives a soundtrack to “unfuckwithable.”
This week, the L.A. trio — Will Ivy, Justin Sullivan (Night Shop, Kevin Morby) and bassist Tim Hellman (Osees) — inflicted some well-placed body blows with a new single, “Time Warp in Exile.” Serrated guitar riffs, a levitating bass line, Ivy’s urgent rants: They hurt] so good.
The song is the first taste of Flat Worms’ third album, “Witness Marks,” out Sept. 22 via God?, which is Ty Segall’s imprint on Drag City. The album follows up “Antarctica,” which was released in the early days of the pandemic.
Of the new single, Ivy says: “Given the opportunity to live in harmony, human nature takes over to corrupt. Jealousy and greed cannot be tamed; the relatable fate of Cain and Abel.”
