It’d be awesome to let this get passed and have the people vote on the final design. The current “seal-on-a-bedsheet” design is so bland and is easily confused for several other states.

I read some of the comments from opposing votes on the bill and you have these guys concerned that loggers and moose won’t get proper representation on the 1901 flag like they do on the seal. And? Most flags don’t represent every little thing about the state. It’s a bad faith argument simply because of the letter next to the bill sponsor’s name

Yeah, look at New Mexico and Alaska, great flags that represent only 1-2 things about their state, but are so iconic. I want an iconic flag!

I’d love to see a contest where artists submit their designs and it’s narrowed down to 5 choices for the ballot. Current, 1901, and three citizen entries. We have ranked choice voting, let’s use it!

If you haven’t seen CGP Grey’s video where he ranks the state flags, it’s worth a watch. It shows how many are just seal on a blue sheet. In fact, so many are bad that he splits F tier into it’s own tier list. Maine starts at about 4:25 and is very short, but I suggest the whole video as you can learn a lot about good flag design.

The 1901 flag is leaps and bounds better than our current generic flag. The only reason I see anyone would argue against it is fear of change and that’s not a valid reason. Change it back and the old flag will be forgotten quickly, because nobody even cares about it now.
