Lawmakers are condemning a recent defacement of a Hindu temple in Newark, Calif., that local authorities are looking into as a possible hate crime.
Authorities are investigating the vandalizing of the Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Hindu Temple with graffiti as a possible hate crime, according to a report from The Mercury News. The defacing of the temple was found Friday morning.
“I unequivocally condemn this attack on Swaminarayan Mandir Hindu Temple in California. Hatred in all forms cannot be tolerated,” Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) said in a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, on Saturday. “Those responsible must be held accountable.”
More Americans being othered in this country for not being Christian. I sympathize and I’m sorry it happened.
It was sikh separatist slogans and wasn’t written in English. I’m pretty sure the Christians aren’t to blame on this one. That said, it’s idiotic to deface a Hindu temple because you’re pissed at Modi and Indian hindutva assholes. I don’t know if I’d quite call it a hate crime, myself.
Modi claims to represent Hinduism and that India is a Hindu state.
He’s wrong but just like Israel, when you claim to represent the religion and do awful things in its name I could understand how some fall into this trap. And it’s still wrong.
