  • Are we slow rolling sync with other servers, or is this just normal behavior?

Both! When we were down, content didn’t federate to us. The servers trying to send that content to us will then retry and send it again, and each time it fails, they wait longer until they try again the next time. As a result, the stuff we missed will start rolling in at different times, depending on which instance it’s coming from.

But also, it’s normal behaviour for vote counts to differ, because we ignore downvotes, most other instances don’t. We have defederate some instances, which other instances may not have (or vice versa) and as a result, we will show different vote totals because we don’t have the same voting sources.

  • We are basically down at the moment, as our two database servers had a cascading issue. One went down and took down the other.

Our backup DB server is still up and running, but it’s running on slower disks (with more space) and it’s currently serving all of our instances and re-syncing the main two DB servers, so whilst that’s happening, everything is really slow. It will be another 12 to 18 hours before it all syncs up again.

That being said, the site you are looking at for uptime information seems to be getting confused about our uptime, probably because we use dedicated regional endpoints. Until the DB issues in the last few days, our uptime has solid despite lestat saying otherwise.

  • I’ve removed a bunch of comments from this thread.

The “but” in this meme means “But there are instances where I don’t support a trans person’s identity/equal rights”. It means that there is never a scenario where you think it’s ok to suggest that trans people should have less rights than cis people, and that there is never a scenario where you think it’s ok to invalidate a trans persons identity.

If your reply is something along the signs of supporting the “but…” because you think “actually, there are some shitty trans people”, then cool, we know, but this isn’t the thread for it, and you’re pulling trans people down in a trans space, to defend a position no one was making. This isn’t that thread. This is a thread for support. So I’ve removed those “gotcha” replies.

If your reply is “actually, there are times when trans people don’t deserve equal rights or to have their identity respected”, then your comment has been removed, and you’ve been permanently banned from all blahaj spaces.

  • I dropped literally everything in your list for the reasons you outlined (except WoW, which I dropped before I knew anything about Blizzard).

But Rowling is worse than them.

Corporations are amoral, and entirely self serving. They will fuck over anyone if it earns the corporation a profit.

Rowling is not amoral. Rowling is driven by hate, and her goal is not self interest, and her harm is not indiscriminate. Her harm is targeted and deliberate, and she explicitly uses her visibility to normalise and encourage harm to the people she is targeting.

And deliberate targeted hate that tries to create more hate is worse than amoral self interest.

  • We’re aware of it, but at this point, we’re not planning on it.

The lens through which I view decisions like this is the health of the trans and gender diverse community on the threadiverse. Each time, basically, the process is answering the question “Would banning this user or defederating this instances strengthen the gender diverse community on the threadiverse or weaken it?” In the case of instances full of transphobes that take no action on transphobia, that’s an easy question.

But in the case of lemmy.world? There are a LOT of gender diverse users on lemmy.world, and the admins are responsive whenever I reach out to them about transphobes on their instance. Defederating them would notably splinter and diminish the community, and I’m not sure the gains are worth that.

If there is a strong community desire that it happen, then we’re open to it, but otherwise, I feel it would just leave us with islands of isolated trans folk that can’t interact with each other, more than we already have…

Edit - I will add, we have a good relationship with the FAF admins, and we share a matrix space independent of lemmy.world and the other mega instances to aid with moderating against bigotry.
