  • The job market is such a shit show right now. You would think hiring would be easy, but the hiring process has been taken over by bean counters who think salaries should go down because their are so many people looking, HR drones trying to hold on to power as they offer nothing of value in the hiring process, sloperator managers whose heads and asses have become even more indistinguishable, and neurotypical extroverted tech-bro wannabe executives who want everybody in the office to stoke their egos. As a developer trying to hire developers it sucks, and as a developer looking for a job it is a nightmare.

  • Story time. I used to have a house adjacent to a school. The city threatened to use eminent domain to take and tear down several houses on the block to add more parking for the school. One block away from a huge parking lot that always had at least 10 times as many open spaces as they were intending to build. At the first public meeting, the first question was “Why can’t people just park across the street?”, at which point they admitted that nobody involved ever came to the school in person, or bothered to zoom out on a map, and they didn’t know about it. The plan was promptly cancelled.

  • In The Netherlands, just like everywhere else, the people who live in densely populated areas subsidize those who live in remote areas, and everybody subsidizes those who drive, both with the cost of car-centric infrastructure, and the externalized costs of destroying the planet. At least here in The Netherlands, most people have the option to live somewhere with good public transit.

Why don’t you move closer to where you work?

Yes, NS is kind of expensive, but it could get more subsidies if we offered less subsidies to the drivers.
