  • IORC I tried to activate every test that was possible (although I can’t remember whether you can configure much in the windows tool).

The windows tool is a bit… strange. You can find it in the start menu by searching for it („Windows Memory Diagnostic“) or by running the mdsched command. After confirmation, that tool will reboot into a Memtest like UI and run its tests. When it finishes, it will automatically reboot to windows and send a notification with its result. If you miss this notification, you have to open the Event log and search for its output there. I haven’t found a way to make it display its results and wait for a manual confirmation for a reboot or another easy way to check the results. But I haven’t used it often.

  • In case you’re dual booting - Windows also has a memory diagnostic tool. This did identify my RAM as broken almost immediately, while Memtest reported everything OK after a full scan of several hours. As I only knew Memtest back then it took me weeks to find why my PC was constantly randomly crashing, until I learned of that.

But that was about 2 years ago, so maybe Memtest did improve since then? (Or maybe I had some very weird behaving RAM and finding it with other tools was just pure luck…)

Also the task manager currently has a bug where it’s process keeps running when you close the window. So, to get rid of it, you now either need to open another task manager and kill that process (and the one you have currently open) or do a reboot…
