Not really. Passkey is an authentication technology. If you use it in addition to some other authentication, you get it as a second factor. If you use it instead of the other mechanism (i.e. replace the password login with the passkey) you got one factor, the passkey. PieFed does the latter. So it’s not 2FA.

As far as I know we don’t have 2FA, as in a second factor added to the password. We got passkeys, though. It’s in one of the tabs of the settings: https://nord.pub/user/passkeys and there is oauth as well.

I’m just a bit opposed to the entire “utility” narrative. It’s far too simplistic in my eyes. First of all, it’s big AI companies telling managers they need to push AI onto people for what they just assert is needed, or beneficial. (While selling their product. And everyone else might be a bit too gullible.) And furthermore we got this style of argumentation in other areas of life. Starts with “medication” with no scientific backing, yet people buy it. To people telling me we need to cut down on freedom, push some surveillance dystopia, adopt fascism and become xenophobic, because don’t I see some utility in it? There sure is a few criminals out there?! …I think it’s all the same flawed debate. Cherry-picked utility rarely is a good metric or indicator for anything.

I think it’s super involved to assess utility in a good way. Not even the large companies know whether AI coding makes their workforce more or less productive once everything is factored in. So, if it’s the kind of utility they’re looking for. And then there will be downsides so we gotta balance and weigh everything…

I think that’s way better than sending downvotes to comments because of politics and opinion. And I’d invite other people to do the same. It’s probably a lost cause, though.

I think this is a bit of a misunderstanding.

You laid down a hypothetical situation. It was kinda your idea to talk about an alternate reality where humanity thinks nuclear is fascist… You said lets assume everyone thinks it is, what would be the consequences? And I said, yeah, let’s assume that for the sake of argument. And I went with it. That doesn’t make it my opinion.

I guess what I mainly wanted to say is: We’re writing science fiction stories here. Nobody knows what would have happened if history had been very different. You’re simply asserting it would have turned out bad. But it could also have turned out great. All we know is this timeline. So we’re bound to think every change from the status quo must be worse. But we don’t necessarily live in the best of possible worlds. Maybe the absence of nuclear power would be bad. Maybe it’d be great, as I laid down. Why shouldn’t it?

I’ve had 2 SSDs fail. But in a different way. They just died randomly and never read any data after that. I just kept the computers, bought a new SSD and reinstalled everything.

By the way if you have a really tight budget… There’s refurbished laptops as well. I got a nice Dell 7390 for a fraction of the cost of a new laptop. Find a shop you trust, though. And it won’t be the newest model, and the battery might not be in best condition with used laptops. That’s the downsides.

Now they have some oil crisis in the 70s and they’re forced to invest massively in renewables. Develop high yield solar cells earlier than we did. Now it’s 2000. The whole planet runs on clean energy, in fact there’s cheap energy in abundance. Economy is booming and by 2020 everyone has a flying car. Also the cold war never happened and everyone in the middle east has been living in peace for 50 years because there wasn’t many proxy wars between the US and USSR… Awesome! It was exactly the right move to immediately declare it evil and throw it out.

(Subsequently they have to deal with the massive energy surplus during daytime. That’s bled off in large datacenters and used to calculate the cure to cancer, the flu etc, which is done by 2030. Now they’re calculating the holy grail.)

Knowledge should be relatively impossible, though, if you just get the names and hashsums of the files? I mean I guess you could look up if a specific file you already have is in it. Might have some application. It needs to be very detailed, though. If they just call it GitHub-dump-timestamp or Wikipedia-dump-2026 with some overall hash, that doesn’t tell us anything.
