  • I am not 100% sure it is available in English, but have a look at KiSi (Salfeld).

Imho the best parental control app - while it is not free it is run by a small German company (I had very delightful contact with the founder), falls under the GDPR, offers very flexible scenarios, a windows client that offers roaming, various options to lock down the internet (whitelist/blacklist both manually or curated), reporting (what webpages are consumed, which are blocked, what apps are used how long). Times can be set per group and both by the time of the day and by usages times (e.g. this group can always be used, this can only be used during the day and this group can only be used weekday afternoons and weekend all day but only for 2h per week across the PC and the smartphone). It also allows requesting access/more usage times via a “parents Version” of the app.

It’s not self hosted, it currently does not support Linux, but after testing basically everything on the market I accepted that one. Funny enough now eldest has asked for the already massively reduced access(no social media, only limited Youtube, mainly wikipedia and similar sites whitelisted) to be blocked during certain hours of the day (and their PC access blocked as well - which is a different beast as we use FreeIPA and Fedora) so they have 90min of focus time for homework.

  • Both Italy and Austria are EU member states , fall under the GDPR AND NIS2 and while both government(even under the FPÖ) have their downsides neither has legislation that is even remotely close to what the US even have today (and had for decades) and unlike the US both countries still have a very well working judical system and the ECJ.

So. Yes. While not perfect, their situation is massively better than a US non for profit. Total different league. Not even in the same ballpark.

Seperate servers (with different locations - one in LAN,one with Hetzner, one with OVH) that provide intranet (only available in the HomeLAN or via Wireguard), extranet(“public” services as in “to friends and family”) and Backup/Monitoring services.

Everything behind OPNsenses, with strict firewall rules, crowdsec and acting as a reverse proxy. Additionally certain things are locked down via hosting provider based firewalls (as I have the luxury to have a static IP at home I can easily do limit ingress for some extranet services)

VLAN seperation both within HomeLAN and Proxmox. Proxmox firewall rules to limit intra VLAN access. Unpriviliged LXC containers - seperated per service. Anything needing docker runs in rootless podman within an unpriv. LXC. (If it does not run like that it won’t run. End of discussion) Authentik for OIDC. If it does not do OIDC/SAML is does not run. (Only exception is LDAP in HomeNet as I am running free IPA anyway) Also acts as Jumpserver via VNC/RDP.

As I am using ansible/Terraform (via Semaphore) for everything I also strictly enforce fail2ban and certain monitoring components. (Namely Zabbix and Wazuh)

  • No, not personally.

But I don’t live in the US (so healthcare costs are not much of an concern, despite me being disabled) and know I am incredibly lucky. Is it economically worse? Fuck yeah.

I am self employed/have my own company and I am also blessed with a high earning (and in every other aspect awesome) wife who brings in the main income (she works full time, I normally would work 70%).

Two years ago I had 5 full time slots(filled by 7 people), now I am down to 3. Being unable to renew contracts with people at the beginning of the year broke something in me. It’s not their fault. They did their best. While I sure could have done some things differently I am somewhat sure by now that in the broad picture I could not have done much to save their jobs - I already have reduced my own payout to the legal minimum (less than 50% of my already average theoretical wage) and used loopholes to even pay nothing to me for half a year. But cutting costs only goes so far if not enough new projects come in.

My clients are mostly healthcare and public services and these sectors are forced to massively cut costs due to our incompetent neocon government.

The only thing that lets me sleep at night easier is the fact that by now I could “recommend” all affected people (who wanted that) into new jobs, so none is left unemployed.

While it hasn’t been direct make me struggle personally I am struggling with my company.

Which sucks balls, especially considering seeing how competitors get huge grants just for “being in the right party”,etc.

We are also otherwise very lucky - We (well, half of it is owned by the bank, but who 's house isn’t) own a house - but it’s an three apartment building we simply live in one. The other two apartments are rented out (below median rent and far below what I might get if I push things) and our apartment is rather, well, mediocre. But that’s okay. It’s mainly meant as a way to invest money I made when younger by doing some incredibly risky but lucrative jobs. And to make sure we don’t need to bother with another landlord ever again. We just liked the location, the age (it’s over 70 years old) and the property - and have now have a relationship with our two other renters that is basically “live and let live”. They know they can simply knock on our door if something’s wrong and have profited by the modernisation of some core things, but also don’t bother me with bullshit.

The rent we now receive will go to the bank for at least two more decades,so it’s not something that helps us financially now - but it might help my kiddo one day.

So yeah. I am still incredibly lucky.

  • This is NOT good news. It is actually bad news.

A lot of these startups are founded by people who have recently been fired or otherwise made redundant. The survivability of these companies is questionable.

Additionally there are on going issues that the relatively quick process of starting up a company is used by organised crime in money laundering (e.g. Chinese Prato based structures) - there are estimates that these use thousands of shell companies that vanish after months

Just looking at the number of startups is a very very bad metric. Much more interesting would be:

    • Gross revenue in the first year

    • Average employees per Startup (a lot of these are single employee companies)

    • Reported profit per company after one year

    • Lifetime of startup companies

I am afraid a lot of these metrics will be really really bad looking.

Despite what people think founding a company is easy in Germany. You can do found a limited liability company with basically only the notary costs+1€. I had mine started in a week at the beginning of Covid. Getting a notary appointment is the hardest and most expensive part and that is only necessary for a limited liability company. Otherwise? Generate a few documents and send them in. You can do that electronically these days if you can sign via eIDAS.

    No issues.

    Bureaucracy comes later.

The German mandatory old age insurance comes to check in. Oh…you are building a new company, are the only employee or have very little employees and only have two clients so far? Yeah fuck you that’s dependent employment and you are not a actual company. They can even decide in one year it’s not and then come back next year and decide differently.

The workers comp deciding seemingly randomly when they come to check you actually do things the way they want.

The tax office is a different matter as well. (Mine is actually somewhat cooperative and nice. Other’s aren’t)

And don’t get me started on the sheer lack of competence in the German banking system. I operate outside Germany as well and the difference is staggering.I happily let someone pull a teeth out of my jaw without anaesthesia or deal with the tax office every day if I could avoid those. With my Italian and Swiss banks? No issues.

Source: Founder - 6 years ago. Still hating it. Worst and best decision of my life.

Muss man halt überwachen).

Idealweise in Rücken, notfalls in Seitenlage.
