CanadaPolitics@lemmy.ca•Davos LIVE: Canadian PM Mark Carney speaks at World Economic Forum
11·24 days agoMy real problem is all the US tech dependency. Gmail. Youtube. Apple Music. Amazon Web services…
Imagine if there was an executive order to turn off Google, Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft web services to Canada. How much economic damage would that cause instantly? We’d be set back a decade.
I’ve got a small business and we’re contemplating setting up a NextCloud server to try to move off a few of these things.
Hey, at least we have lemmy.ca (and such!)
Hyperion. One of the finest pieces of sci fi.
Aka, bunch of drunk hosers make some shit up ;)
I can never do these. One eye is too dominant.
I was in Jamaica recently. Sitting on the beach. Shopping for a new piece of furniture for when I got home. One company’s website refused to load if I was on the resort’s wifi (with a similar “suspicious activity” page). But loaded fine if I went from the cell network. Not even the foggiest hint of how to inform anyone. Could be like that for decades…
The game engine that Paradox uses in their games is named after him. For reasons

6·1 month agoHi, it is me, Poland, in 1936. Nothing bad will happen. Just focus on the cost of living and ignore what’s happening next door.

11·1 month agoWhat’s interesting to me is that Canadian MSM is now saying this out loud.
Fight, flight, or freeze. How would you respond? How will you prepare for one of those three?
Only 30C on the thermal camera. Body temp is 37C, so quite reasonable ;)

It’s a chicken and egg problem, trying to get critical mass. But also, someone has to do it first! Federated servers would be perfect here, as you can simultaneously start small, but also access a larger network.
But perhaps a simpler question: are there any successful indigenous owned web hosts? Email providers? Server farms? Etc.?
You disappoint me using a US pop culture reference. (Am I doing this right?)
They’ve already got a joint account. Basically married.

Was in Chile earlier this year. There is a nice museum in Santiago which is basically about the Pinochet era. Seemed to be pretty honest about the whole thing. They didn’t blame the CIA at all. They did talk about the school of economics that Pinochet subscribed to. That’s influence, yes, but not the same thing as orchestrating the coup.
