Surge Engine is a 2D retro game engine with an included Sonic-like game (Surge the Rabbit) for anyone who wants to make their own platformers like classic Sonic. The developers just released a big new version.
Yep, that feels exactly like Sonic 2. I’m not a fan of putting a water level as the very first level in the game, though.
Edit: when I exited the “Waterworks” often-underwater level, it gave me the option to try the “classic levels.” That started me off in a zone called “Sunshine Paradise,” which was a much better intro to the game. After I beat that zone, it took me to what was apparently an older(?) version of the Waterworks zone, which was also less underwater.
Don’t get me wrong: that first Waterworks level it defaulted to is a good level; it’s just too challenging for a first level because of the drowning mechanic.
