Good thing in theory, but everyone knows that “Republicans for the Rule of Law” is self-contradictory.
We’ve long since passed the point where the GOP has become a fascist party with absolute contempt for the rule of law and democracy that you can’t be a member of without being complicit.
Republicans totally respect the rule of law, as long as they are not subject to those same laws. They define tyranny as anytime a conservative faces the consequences of their actions.
Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect
You’re describing the far-right (MAGA). There is absolutely still a large population of traditional conservatives, typically living in cities, who only vote Republican for minimal social programs and low taxes. They’re usually quiet conservatives, whose votes don’t matter in presidential elections, but they still vote in every election. They’re the ones who should be standing up to Trump, but haven’t. Maybe this is the start of something.
“Our constitutional system is predicated on legal accountability and equal justice under the law, even for presidents and past presidents,” Sarah Longwell, the executive director of Republicans for the Rule of Law, said in a statement. “Conservatives feel this in our bones: No man or woman is above the law. In this case, that means rejecting the ‘absolute immunity’ claim.”
In my opinion, the more people against Trump, the better.
No, they’re still voting for Congressmembers complicit in shielding Donald from justice. If their representatives were for the rule of law they would have impeached him over the insurrection (if not over extorting a foreign country (if they were for the rule of law they would have heard evidence)) and ensured he was barred from office. Conservatives either don’t feel it in their bones or they have hollow jelly bones that buckle when promised a mild short-term tax incentive.
What help am I not accepting? What does acceptance even look like, I should pat them on the head for trying to walk back the decades of propaganda? They’re doing this but in November the majority of Repubs will still vote for Donald and the reps supporting him.
My initial comment, that you replied to, was defending against judgement of the validity of their cause.
I’m simply saying let them help. They’re already getting criticized by MAGA. Just let them say what they came to say without discrediting the message. It’s benefits us all, and it’s on their dime.

That may be, but since the fascist MAGA crowd is in charge, voting for them still makes them fascism enablers.
If they wanted those two things and didn’t want fascism, they could vote for the Libertarian Party or another non-fascist party.
They’re the ones who should be standing up to Trump, but haven’t. Maybe this is the start of something.
Yeah, we’ve been hearing this hopium since the 2016 primaries and Trump’s stranglehold of the party has only gotten tighter.
I guarantee that there were many “normal conservatives” that supported Mussolini, Franco, Hitler and Pinochet too.
They were actively choosing to support fascism, and so is every single person voting Republican in 2024.
Why so negative? They’re not enabling Trump if they’re actively advocating against his immunity claim. I’m not suggesting this absolves them of classism, covert bigotry, or voting Republican in general.
I’m simply saying we could use their help in this matter. You don’t want people to help bail out a sinking ship simply because they think they’re better than you? I say let them help, and wait until the job is done to tell ‘em to fuck off.
Because I’m not a fan of fascism, people who support fascism, or hypocrisy. I’m kooky like that.
They’re not enabling Trump if they’re actively advocating against his immunity claim
They’re still voting for his party. Because that’s what it is now: a fascist party owned by one tyrant.
As long as they’re still voting Republican, they’re enabling him, no matter how much they virtue signal to the contrary in public.
I’m simply saying we could use their help in this matter.
And I’m saying that they’re not helping. By insisting that they’re still Republican, they’re signaling that they’re no threat to him since they’ll vote for him no matter what.
You don’t want people to help bail out a sinking ship simply because they think they’re better than you?
I don’t consider shouting “we should bail out all this water!” while helping to drill holes in the boat helpful.
I say let them help,
Again, they’re not helping. They’re pretending to be against fascism while still voting for fascism. Doing a Susan Collins, if you will.

Yep! It’s Wilhoit’s law:

Why don’t you want their help? We’re facing the same direction on this one. I’m not suggesting a free pass, just accepting the help.

Your pessimism is so strong you must see ground when you look up.
It’s not pessimism, it’s just calling a spade a spade.
