From the way I read it, it sounds like the guy had the rod from the lawn ornament with him, inside the freezer. He then tried to push the rod through the freezer seal from the inside, in an attempt to disengage the latch on the outside, but could not make it work.
If that’s the correct assessment, it means the guy was actively trying to escape, but couldn’t.

Oh, that makes more sense. Poor guy, they don’t say what he was on the run from the cops for, but I can’t imagine he deserved such an awful way to go.
