I think I understand your argument, but it’s not hard to imagine someone telling a teenager that quote, prior to them getting steady work only a few years later.
It’s also moldy advice. I recall this one getting tossed around back in the 1980’s, by parents that absolutely went from zero responsibility to paying taxes on salary and a house, just after graduating High school. Things are very different now.
