I’m not used to seeing cards with the “any number” effect, so my question is does that apply to commander as well? I don’t think this would be particularly broken, but it would be an easy way to get some damage out at the right times.
Yup, it applies to Commander. You’re right that Rat Colony isn’t broken, but it’s nice for people who don’t want to put a ton of effort into building a deck. (Try Karumonix or Vren as a commander.)
A friend of mine has a Commander deck packed with Shadowborn Apostles and demons. It’s pretty fun.
