At least in the US, our culture has changed significantly since they were young and the world that influenced their values during their formative years really no longer exists. Since the 1950s, LBJ passed the Civil Rights Act, women can open their own credit card accounts, the Soviet Union collapsed, Americans are becoming generally less religious, a black man became president (for two terms!) and gay marriage has been legalized. It’s no wonder so many of their beliefs are outdated and not shared by the youth.
Of course, there are plenty of older folks that are open minded and want to leave behind a better world the next generation and understand that times have changed. Many of these older folks were instrumental in these tremendous achievements we achieved over the last half century.
However, those older folks are not the problem; there is a significant contingent of older folks that desperately want to “restore” the world that they grew up in and those ones tend to be very politically active and therefore have outsized influence on the country’s elections. These are the ones who form a significant base for the republican party and the fact they resent so much of the progress we’ve made is extremely unnerving.
They are also extremely reliable voters.
