They’ve deluded themselves into believing that the majority of their voters actually agree with their insane, horrifying beliefs and plans (or, at the very least, not openly.
They have benefited so long by maintaining a level of plausible deniability that allows them to pretend that they don’t actually want this country to be a Christian theocratic fascist nation, they just want to lower your taxes and want smaller government. Really.
