That’s a fantastic question I’ve not thought of. Maybe he can play on the right? I imagine it’ll be hard to dislodge White.
I would prefer us to have a regular leftback to who can link up with Nelli/Trossard like White and Saka.
I think that might be the plan. Can’t invert both fullbacks, and White isn’t as good at it. So either White plays a bombing forward role with Zinchenko/the heir to that throne on the left, or Cauliflower on the right and a straightforward fullback (Tomiyasu, Kiwior maybe) on the left.
He has a potential claim to the 6 if we commit to having Rice at the 8, but Merino links kind of make me question that.
I think the most likely scenario that he takes the starting LB position as a default but covers CB, RB, and 6 frequently enough that Cala still gets gametime at LB. He’s a flexible defender like Tomiyasu with valuable tools going forward, so it may just be the case that his position changes in response to inevitable injuries, rotation, and tactical adjustments before or even during games.
In other words, he may be given the responsibility of changing where/how he plays to allow the rest of the defence to settle into their preferred positions without being too disrupted when one of the regular starters is missing.
