Ice arenas are enclosed spaces where inadequate ventilation can trap toxic gases emitted by fossil fuel-burning equipment. But only three states require ice rinks to test their air quality and take action if it exceeds certain thresholds.

Zambonis weren’t cheap to begin with, being a specialized piece of equipment, and they’ve been hit by similar inflation issues as the car industry has.
