Heated platforms and purge towers are among Stratasys’ infringement claims.
Case files: https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.txed.232140/gov.uscourts.txed.232140.1.0.pdf, https://insight.rpxcorp.com/litigation_documents/15797606
Not weird- business as usual. Stratasys camps on patents and will randomly lash out with lawsuits at upstarts, then often acquire them and others later to further sit on patents. Stratasys has not innovated at all in numerous years and is almost completely stagnant. They’re starting to lose ground in the enterprise space so they must start scratching for legal monopolies rather than compete seriously.
Prusa should have been a target long ago and I am surprised they haven’t been sued. Or, they have been sued and just reached an agreement that I missed.
Speaking of which, the code to generate a purge tower is in the slicer, which is just sent to the printer via g-code. Bambu used Prusa Slicer as their base for Bambu Studio and likely didn’t change much code for the tower itself. That is what is making this weird for me.
But yeah, the technical details probably don’t matter much and it’s just an attempt to get Bambu to cave and pay royalties.
