The link makes it seem like crap hardware, and sure 4gb of ram is really crappy. But how does this compare with one of my kid’s Fire tablets? Does anyone have opinions on that?

You do realize you‘re in a risc-v focused community, right?

Risc-v is a huge deal in microcontrollers and advancing quickly in the sbc market and also getting more and more applications in mobile and desktop devices.

Also, apple hardware is among the worst you can get from an environmental perspective. The devices you buy, no matter how good you treat them will be unusable once apple drops support.

This device on the other hand has support for as long as you backport the new kernel yourself.

Open Source doesnt mean a lot, until there are enough interested devs (or you) to do the work.

Just ask how many pinephones are used for more then “interesting test phone you pull out of the drawer once a quarter”.

I’m an iphone hater, but I assume the environmental aspect of this is worse then an Ipad you use for 5+ years. (On average, per total time used, YMMV)

Thanks for chiming in. I would like you to check the many different open source implementations. Wikipedia has a nice article about it and from https://postmarketos.org you can see that the advancements in the phone market are coming more and more frequently.

This is also further underlined by rising prices/dropping availability of rootable phones on ebay and co.

The question shows that you‘re also not used to the dev community of the phone OSs. The pinephone was a very courageous project and a pioneer. It was never intended to be an end user device but a stepping stone. We are seeing massive improvements all over, with more than 250 devices being supported by postmarketOS and dozens of people helping.

Apples „use 5-8 years, then throw away“ policy only works for end users, not unilaterally. You can always sell your old oneplus6 to someone for reuse, not so much your iphone 6 although both are out of official support.
