I think like the original sequels, this series became tired and derivative with each new release. They should have given it a rest and maybe done a premium TV series eventually instead.
It’s true that TV shows offer more playroom to develop and add/remove characters, especially considering the sociological nature of POTA. So you’re probably right, even though I very much do like the original trilogy (plus this movie).
I wonder how the Tim Burton version would have been received if he hadn’t thrown a tantrum and changed the ending. I actually prefer people in costumes and makeup playing the apes, rather than CGI. Just like spaceship models, sometimes well done practical effects work better.
