The Rogue Trader books are full of Space Marines getting absolutely destroyed, 2nd ed onwards they are portrayed as the heroes fighting evil so that largely disappeared.
Rogue Trader was different in quite a few ways to what we know as 40k these days (or even 20years ago), a lot of the fun faded out as it was sanitised over the years. It’s a real shame, but GW is raking it so I doubt they regret their decision.

I feel like there was a lot more Colonial Marines in early Space Marines and it gradually faded out
