Sometimes I question this shit, like did dudes really show up at other people’s houses to debate their wives intellectually? I dont see that happening today with any “leaders”
'twas a different time. No phones, letters took weeks or months to get to their recipients, communities, especially of persecuted political minorities like socialists, could be very tight-knit. Also, not much else to do, especially if you weren’t fabulously wealthy. This is the era when parlor games first came into fashion, after all.
Thats one thing I always forget the magnitude of, the sheer amount of boredom present. These people didn’t have a million different things eating at their attention constantly. Information and stimuli were slower and fewer between.
