Since most english haikus I come across do not adhere to the strict format I assume it’s true.
Initially I stuck to the pure 5/7/5 format and that was fun, but after some experimentation I appreciated the greater flexibility which allows for a better rhythm.
I like it but it’s not an haiku

Since if I’m not mistaken the first line does not have 5 syllables but 4

I just want to say that all I know about haikus is the 7-5-7 rule. Thank you for enlightening me with your approach, it makes a lot more sense to me.
