I’d love to see more developers with this attitude.

Atmosphere? Love it. Dread? Great! Darkness? Tolerable. Jump Scare? No thank you.

Jump scares are like the fart jokes of horror. Cheap thrills, low craftsmanship, and turns people off of the market.

And that’s not to say I don’t appreciate the occasional jump scare. They can be tastefully made, or used sparingly. Less is often more with these, and it helps add to the tension knowing it might come up again. But if they’re just non stop they lose their payoff quickly.

Are you me? Love horror movies and games but jump scares are so lazy and the bane of my existence. Atmosphere is all I want. Everyone I know, though, thinks jumpscares are “fun” and I could never imagine why or how.

I was going to say fart jokes is a terrible comparison to jump scaress, but you are right. Both must be used sparingly and make sense in the scene to he useful, and most movies don’t need them, especially if they clash with the feel of the movie. They can really destroy any tension or immersion when done poorly.

A lot of movies with jump scares would be better served with surprises instead, where the tension is broken but the way of doing it is through suddently seeing/hearing the unexpected without the sudden sting of a jump scare.
