    The margin was so great I’m not sure it would have mattered, but maybe it would have been closer.

    Incidentally, the margin was similar to the failed Republic vote in the 1990s. I’m not sure if Australians just hate referendums, or if it’s just conservatism in general (including the love of hierarchies and the status quo).

      Maybe. I voted again the Republic (bit for The Voice) not because I’m a monarchist but the proposal for how it was to be setup was bullshit. Now we have to endure that shitball King visiting, so there is that.

      Referendums generally fail, people don’t like changing the constitution full stop. I know quite a few left-leaning people that voted no because they wanted the voice to he legislated but not constitutionally enshrined.

      But how much of that margin was due to conservative (racist) propaganda? Nobody would have cared about the voice if they legitimately knew it was a powerless virtue signal that wouldn’t impact them or the government.
