    Explanation: German-Americans, coming from a country without a recent tradition of slavery, and many of whom were, at the time, exiles from the liberal and socialist revolutions (there was infighting involved) of '48, were one of the more ardently anti-slavery immigrant groups in the US, and volunteered in large numbers for the Union cause.
