I know many people’s interest in Israeli politics started on October 7. But prior to that, the big political news in Israel was a failed attempt at Judicial reform meant to significantly weaken the judiciary. In American terms, it would have been like stripping the Supreme Court of it’s ability to declare laws unconstitutional.
This was pushed almost entirely by the right wing in Israel because they were upset that the courts were acting as a check on their West Bank settlement project; as well as on some of the preferential treatment the Ultra Orthodox get.
