If you found this in the rulebook for any TTRPG, then yes, it would make sense to follow the rules within that game.
Advantage/disadvantage is very explicitly defined in the rules of D&D.

1st through 3rd.
Yeah advantage was introduced in 5th to simplify the game by replacing situational modifiers.
Disadvantage also exists which has you roll two d20 and pick the smaller one.
