The idea that only mortality sweetens life or that the human condition is not to be overcome but celebrated has always been one of my favorite themes in art. At some points in my life I’ve thought this correct and other times I’ve seen it as maudlin or overly sentimental. As I get older, I lean more toward the former more often.
