Summary

Angela Alsobrooks won Maryland’s U.S. Senate race, becoming the state’s first Black senator after defeating popular Republican former Gov. Larry Hogan.

Alsobrooks campaigned on abortion rights, emphasizing Hogan’s past opposition to expanded access, and gun control, with support from Vice President Kamala Harris.

Despite Hogan’s moderate stance and past appeal to Democrats, his criticism of Donald Trump alienated some Republican voters, complicating his path in the blue state.

Alsobrooks highlighted her experience as Prince George’s County executive and former prosecutor, promising to bring her local governance skills to the Senate.

Hogan was very popular in the state. If Trump wasn’t on the ballot, it might have been competitive.
