Barred Owl descending into a local waterway. Somehow, due to the magic of the camera, the timing of my “pan” resulted in a sharp image of the Owl’s face, a rendering of motion in the wings, as well as a blurred background of the Fall foliage. Owls fly silently in part because the trailing edge of the wings bend with the air, reducing turbulence.

A few photos of the last couple of days have really captured the “happy accident” effect. This one sounds like it was not what they were going for, based on the provided story, but what they did capture helps it stand out from many other pics we’ve had that were done with specific intent. Even captured at an imperfect moment, you still can see all the owl’s power, speed, and gracefulness.
