In short:

Indonesia’s government has signalled a shift in its approach to some drug laws, in part to address overcrowding in jails.

A senior minister told reporters that drug users would be sent to rehabilitation instead of prison.

What’s next?

Legal experts warn the move will just relocate drug users from prisons to rehab facilities.

One step at a time. Maybe once the rehab centers fill, they’ll realise that legalisation and certified selling points will be better. But one step at a time.

The existing code was inherited from the Dutch East Indies colonial government.

    Ah, the colonisers again…

Don’t get your hope up, the most they(and we asian in general) will do is to decriminalise drug abuse, which imo is significantly a step forward.

Also let’s not forget that legalising marijuana is still a very new concept, and researcher is still ongoing about the prolonged use of the drug. And “drug use” isn’t exclusive to marijuana, there’s lots and lots of hard drug that shouldn’t be use recreationally.
