Summary

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, impeached over his December 3 martial law declaration, failed to appear before the country’s corruption watchdog (CIO) for questioning on charges of insurrection and abuse of power.

The CIO may issue a second summons or an arrest warrant. Yoon, under an international travel ban, denies the charges and plans to fight them in court.

The constitutional court, reviewing his impeachment, has ordered submission of martial law records, with a preliminary hearing set for December 27.

Yoon faces potential life imprisonment or the death penalty if convicted.

Until the next president does a pardon/commute the sentence.

Fun fact, South Korea President Moon Jae-in commuted the sentence of the former president convicted of bribery charges on “humanitarian grounds” 🤦‍♂️

      Edit: Excerpt from Wikipedia:

In his pardon, President Moon cited Park’s deteriorating health and the needs to “overcome unfortunate past history and promote national unity” as reasons for the pardon.

“national unity”… sound familiar? USA? Gerald Ford Pardoning Nixon?
