In one of the recentish alt texts, he says he switched to a new style because he had just moved to LA and was looking for a job. IMO there was also a noticeable turn towards dark humor around the same time, so maybe he was really stressed at the time or something.

All the old stuff is brash shock factor type stuff, pretty crap and usually not funny in general imo.
