Summary

Incoming Trump administration “border czar” Tom Homan announced plans to resume family detentions as part of a crackdown on undocumented immigrants.

Families with children will be held in tent-like facilities, and parents may face the choice of deporting as a family or leaving US-born children behind.

Homan, known for his role in Trump’s first-term family separation policy, also plans to reinstate worksite raids and the “remain in Mexico” program.

Critics warn these policies, ended under Biden, harm children and undermine humanitarian standards.

I think that’s half true. Family detention centers will fill quickly as our government realizes the absurdly excessive cost of returning all undocumented immigrants to their respective nations of origin.

I’m guessing he either plans to use them as an excuse to funnel money into the prison industry or use them as free labor

Then the program requests more funding / money, which gets pocketed by the privatized people executing on the plans.

This is all just a huge grift to keep people angry and scared, make people suffer, and steal money.

I hate all of these people.

It doesn’t have to be that complicated. Just house them overcrowded in tents in the middle of the desert, don’t provide them with facilities for life, and let them die. It’s what was happening last time. Read some of the accounts from people who visited the facilities and found unresponsive babies or people in obvious urgent medical distress.

You act like they’re going to bother to send them back to their country of origin.

The Mexican government has already made it clear that they will only be accepting Mexican citizens from the US.

They will streamline costs by sending them over the line they crossed. Enter through the southern border? You go back to Mexico. Enter from the north? Straight to Canada.

They won’t bother with sending everyone back to their home country.

Yeah, see the problem is that’s not legal. The nation of destination needs to accept them or they need to leave voluntarily.

Since when has legality been a factor in the matter?

Fair point, but in this case he’d be violating another sovereign nation.

We may not challenge his domestic crimes in the US, but Mexico and the UN may have something to say about violating international law. NATO could sanction the hell out of the US for violating an agreement we helped to create.

It would be a big swing for sure.

When has violating a sovereign nation ever been much of a concern to America?

Trump has never managed anything like this before. His approach to foreign policy his entire first term was peacocking like bizarro Roosevelt.

If Trump were to send all immigrants to Mexico, I don’t think his buddies in Russia, North Korea, China, Israel, and Turkey will be able to relieve the pressure from NATO’s rightfully retaliatory sanctions.
