Summary

Panama marked the 25th anniversary of the U.S. handover of the Panama Canal with celebrations honoring the late Jimmy Carter, who brokered the 1977 treaty transferring control.

Donald Trump has controversially called for the canal to be “returned” to the U.S., citing dissatisfaction with Panama’s increased usage fees.

Panama’s President José Raúl Mulino dismissed concerns about foreign influence, affirming Panamanian control.

Experts note the U.S. lacks legal grounds to reclaim the canal without military action. Meanwhile, rising shipping fees and climate challenges continue to impact the canal’s operations.

The 1977 treaty relinquished control to Panama on Dec 31, 1999. Title was a little weird.
