Summary

New Orleans’ gun buyback program, organized by nonprofit Unchained Realities, offers PlayStation 5 consoles in exchange for functional firearms.

Aimed at improving public safety amid Louisiana’s looser gun laws, the initiative collected 94 guns over six months.

The program ties gun removal to youth engagement by promoting gaming education and career pathways.

Critics argue buybacks have limited impact on crime, but organizers emphasize community engagement and believe even small successes, like preventing one crime, make a difference.

Louisiana’s relaxed gun laws and stricter sentencing have intensified debates on public safety strategies.

Even most entry level guns cost more than a ps5. Unless you’re getting a price of crap pistol or something used, a gun costs more than a ps5

Ps5s are about $500 still iirc.

You can totally get a used hi-point for less than that. Shit you can get a brand new one for less than $500. Police trade-in glocks go for about $400-$450.

They’re not nice guns, but they definitely work. I think this buyback program may very quickly run out of money, and if anything it encourages people to buy guns they otherwise wouldn’t have just to trade them in.

I don’t think you’ve checked gun prices recently. You can absolutely buy a pistol for 200 dollars from a reputable retailer.

Of course. Otherwise people would buy guns to trade for a ps5. You want to have less guns, not more. It’s to encourage the trade in of guns already bought with a reward for doing so, not a way to meet the value of the gun.

        Except they’re wrong. I literally just checked Sportsman’s Warehouse and there’s a ton of 200 dollar pistols available. That’s a cheap PS5…

Maybe you can 3d print a bunch of shitty guns and get a bunch of ps5s? Sounds like a good business model.
