      It depends on the quality and rating of the filter, as well as how dusty/dirty your house is; having pets with fur doesn’t help either.

        Well, we have a furnace that takes those big 4inch wide filters in replacement of an old electrostatic filter, and it tends to over heat and shut off when the weather gets real cold so now I’m wondering if the problem is I’m not replacing the filter enough. Them things are expensive though.

          A dirty filter (or a too high rating) can restrict air flow, which can and will cause the unit to work harder and shorten its life. It might be worth the investment in a new filter and see how your unit responds. You may even want to snake the ducts and make sure they are clean and not clogged.

          The 4 inch filters can last up to 6 months, but may need as frequent as every 4 months based on the individual house.

      Mine is about every 20 days, but I have one large shaggy dog and two large short hair dogs that all shed profusely. Before, I could go about twice that.
