And no, turns out it’s just a bunch of pesticides and more recently (since the mid 90s) they apparently infect them on purpose with something that destroys their liver.
I heard they control mosquitoes this way. They release a ton of sterile male mosquitoes, the males mate with females, and the female lays unfertilized eggs. This dramatically cuts down on the mosquito population.
