Not the most knowledgable Lemmy user. Hell, certainly not the most knowledgeable IndyCar fan for that matter. This not-a-subreddit/community (Lemmy)/magazine (kbin) is getting off to a not-atypical IndyCar ragged rolling start.

I’ve followed it steadily since my wife and I noticed around 2003 or so that we really liked watching the 500 and that maybe we ought to watch more of the races. Went to the 500 in 2007 as well as the last time they were at Kentucky Speedway. I’ve got some mobility issues (and don’t really enjoy crowds), so I’ve had to be satisfied by whatever part of the race NBC (and ABC before that) deign to show between the same five commercials they show over and over and over and over and over.

I’m not aligned with a particular driver. I’m a regular listener of “Off-Track” so I’ll always pull for Rossi, and I’ve liked Pato since he came in. But outside of Sting Ray Robb, it’s not like any of them really annoy me. My wife can’t stand Ferrucci, but he just reminds me of every cocky college student I ever taught. Plus I grew up in Houston and any association with AJ Foyt is a plus. I think it’s the refinery fumes from Pearland.

So anyway, that’s why I’m here. What about you?

Oh thank God, someone broke the ice.

I guess I’ll add on. The pandemic and the free time it afforded me led me into a motorsports rabbit hole thanks to the Chain Bear video on the 2005 US Grand Prix. That led me to F1 at first, followed quickly after by MotoGP and IndyCar. My first race was a pretty dull IndyGP, but the following doubleheader at Road America made sure I was absolutely hooked.

I’m a masochist, so I’ve gravitated towards the Andretti stable, especially Colton Herta. Sure, his balls-to-the-wall style can produce some absolutely painful moments, but when it works, it’s an absolute thing of beauty.

I wish I could say I’ve been to a race as a fan. I went with my parents to the Baltimore GP, but that was when I really wasn’t into motorsports as a kid and, quite frankly, saw no reason to watch cars turn left (I was an idiot as a kid). Now that I have a love for it, I’m now in a (non-NASCAR) motorsports dead zone.
