Boston City Councilor Sharon Durkan has requested a public hearing to discuss taxing sugar-sweetened beverages and using that revenue to help fight diseases such as diabetes and obesity.
If the only major argument is that soda is the cheapest and there’s not a cheaper alternative then that further justifies this bill in my opinion. It’s hard to predict the future, but prices and behaviors would have to change if there were no cheap alternatives. Of course there’s no guarantee that unscrupulous healthy beverages wouldn’t go up in price, but that seems unlikely.
